The Fridge-Door Storage Note
The fridge, freezer, thawing and reheating windows in one place, plus the tiny label habit that prevents evening guesswork.
For
It is 6:12 p.m., the baby is hungry and the unlabelled orange pot could be from Tuesday or Thursday. This sheet exists for that exact moment. Label first, then use the windows below.
A note from present-you
Future-you needs a label
Write what it is and when it was made before the lid goes on. Tomorrow evening, that tiny habit becomes a very easy decision.
On the fridge shelf
- Vegetable and fruit purees - 2 to 3 days, in a sealed container.
- Meals with meat, fish or egg - 24 hours.
- Opened yogurt or ricotta - follow the pot's date; generally 2-3 days.
In the freezer drawer
- Purees and cooked meals - up to 1 month for best taste and nutrients (safe longer, but quality drops).
- Freeze in small portions - ice-cube trays or small pots, so you thaw only what you need.
- Label everything before it freezes - write the food and date while you can still remember both.
Once it has thawed
- Thaw in the fridge (best) or in a bowl of cold water - never at room temperature.
- Use within 24 hours of fully thawing.
- Never refreeze a meal that has already been frozen and thawed.
At reheating time
- Reheat until steaming hot all the way through, then cool to a safe temperature before serving.
- Reheat only once - whatever isn't eaten after reheating gets let go.
- Microwave tip - stir well and check the temperature; microwaves heat unevenly and create hot spots.
When the label is missing
When the date or storage history is unclear, let the portion go. Smell and appearance cannot reliably confirm that food is safe, so do not use a sniff test to overrule the storage window.
Remember
Put a marker beside the freezer bags or keep a roll of labels in the same drawer as the containers. These are general safety windows; keep the fridge at 4°C or below and the freezer at -18°C. Follow any different advice given for your baby.
