When can my baby start solid food?

At 6 months completed. Italian guidance gives six months as the standard, and earlier only in particular situations and on your own paediatrician's advice.

The Ministero della Salute’s own answer is from six months and, where that is not possible, not before four months. SIP says weaning should ordinarily begin after the first six months. WHO says six months.

You will also see a “17 to 26 weeks” window quoted, and it is real - but it is EFSA’s and ESPGHAN’s framing, which the ministry reports alongside its own recommendation rather than adopting. Worth knowing, because seeing both can make it look like the guidance disagrees with itself more than it does.

Every Primi Bocconi recipe is written for six months completed. We do not publish 4-to-5-month variants. That is a deliberate choice to sit with the Italian paediatric majority rather than to widen the market.

What “ready” looks like

Around six months, gut maturation completes and your baby can grasp, chew and swallow effectively. Age is the headline, but readiness is the actual signal, and your paediatrician sees your baby.

What to lead with

Iron. Prenatal iron stores start depleting from around six months, and Italian consensus treats iron as the central nutritional risk of this window - which is why iron-rich food matters more than the order you introduce vegetables in.

Every recipe in Primi Bocconi carries its own safe cut and allergen note for your baby's age, so the rules on this page are already applied by the time you are cooking.
